Missy Elliott battles with Graves' disease

Missy Elliott says Graves' disease not so grave

    • By Alex Dobuzinskis Alex Dobuzinskis – Repost from Yahoo news
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Rap star Missy Elliott on Friday insisted her battle with the thyroid malady Graves' disease has not sidelined her career, a day after it was revealed that she has the ailment.
"I was diagnosed with Graves' disease about three years ago, but it really hasn't slowed me down at all," Elliott said in a written statement.

Elliott, who gained fame in the 1990s and whose hit songs include "Get Ur Freak On" and "Work It," has won four Grammys but has not released an album since 2005's "The Cookbook."
Some media reports on Thursday speculated that the long delay since her last album could be due to the illness, first diagnosed in 2008.

The 39 year-old Elliott talks about her Graves' disease in a taped interview for the VH1 cable show "Behind the Music" set to air on June 29. She describes how it shut down her nervous system and caused her hair to fall out.

But on Friday, Elliott said her condition has recently improved.

"Under my doctor's supervision, I've been off medication for about a year and I'm completely managing the condition through diet and exercise," she said.

Patients with Graves' disease have a thyroid gland that overproduces the hormone thyroxine, which can affect a person's appearance and energy level.

The disease is incurable, but symptoms can be handled with treatment, according to medical organization the Mayo Clinic.

Elliott said on Friday that, far from being inactive, she has since her diagnosis toured Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia and written and produced Grammy-nominated songs for Monica, Keyshia Cole and Jazmine Sullivan.

Elliott is working on an album tentatively titled "Block Party," with producer and rapper Timbaland.

What happens to your body after you drink a soda every day, for a long time

  • Repost by Bliss Tree, on Tue Jun 7, 2011 4:58am PDT

Sugar rushes and caffeine highs followed by a depressing energy crash are what happens to your body if you drink a soda right now, but plenty of Blisstree readers actually seem to be okay with that. Some of you think it’s alarmist to compare a caffeine and sugar rush to doing drugs, and some just don’t really care about the slump they’ll find themselves in after drinking 39 grams of sugar, but what makes us really worried about a soda-slurping habit is what happens over the long term. Here’s a quick snapshot of you, in a few years, after drinking soda on a regular basis:

You’ll Be Fatter: According to research in the Nurse’s Health Study, which monitored the health of 90,000 women for eight years, drinking a single soda every day of the week added 10 pounds over a four-year period.

The 50 Best Cookie Recipes on the Internet
You’ll Probably Have Diabetes: In the Nurses’ Health Study, women who said they drank one or more servings a day of a sugar-sweetened soft drink or fruit punch were twice as likely to have developed type 2 diabetes during the study than those who rarely consumed these beverages.

You’re Much More Likely to Develop Heart Disease: According to a study published in 2007 in Circulation, the journal of the American Heart Association, subjects who drank a soda every day over a four-year period had a 25% chance of developing high blood sugar levels and a 32% greater chance of developing lower “good” cholesterol levels. The Nurses’ Health Study found that women who drank more than two sugary beverages per day had a 40% higher risk of heart attacks or death from heart disease than women who rarely drank sugary beverages.

You’re Probably Also Less Healthy In Other Ways: Several studies, including the 2007 study published in Circulation, suggest that diet sodas have some of the same effects on health as regular sodas, despite having none or very little of the sugar. Why? Drinking soda is typically part of an overall lifestyle that’s not very healthy: We know you don’t like us to compare drinking caffeine and sugar to substance abuse, but when it comes to your lifestyle, some think that soda is just like a gateway drug.

High adrenaline and low insulin are good fat-burning combo, studies show ym benefits undone by too much sitting

Many athletes eat before training because muscles usually get their energy from carbohydrates. But some scientists say that if you want to get rid of fat, you should skip the pre-workout snack.

Running on empty may not be such a bad idea after all.
Though many athletes eat before training, some scientists say that if you really want to get rid of more fat, you should skip the pre-workout snack.
Several studies suggest exercising while your body is low on food may be a good way to trim excess fat. In a recent paper, European researchers found that cyclists who trained without eating burned significantly more fat than their counterparts who ate.
Muscles usually get their energy from carbohydrates, which is why athletes like Lance Armstrong and Michael Phelps scarf down enormous amounts of food before a race. But if you haven't eaten before exercising, your body doesn't have many carbohydrates in reserve. That forces it to burn fat instead, scientists say.

728 x 90 New Years

"When you exercise (after fasting), your adrenaline is high and your insulin is low," said Peter Hespel, a professor of exercise physiology at the University of Leuven in Belgium. "That ratio is favorable for your muscles to oxidize (break down) more fatty acids." Hespel said that people who exercise without having eaten burn more fat than they would if they had grabbed a bite beforehand.
In a study published in April, researchers at the University of Birmingham and elsewhere assigned seven people to cycle three days a week, followed by an intense session an hour later without eating. Another seven people followed the same regimen, without the instruction to fast.
Though members of the group that didn't eat performed worse on the intensive training, they burned a higher proportion of fat to carbohydrates than the group that ate. The results were published by Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, the journal of the American College of Sports Medicine.
Hespel and colleagues tested the effects on men who did endurance training without eating versus those who ate. In the athletes who hadn't eaten, the researchers found a spike in the amount of proteins needed to process fat, meaning their bodies had been primed through fasting to burn more fat.
Hespel recommends people do this kind of training before breakfast, since eating carbohydrates interrupts the process of metabolizing fat for about six hours afterward.
Breaking down fat quickly Though he and colleagues have primarily studied the effects of exercising without eating in young, healthy people, he thinks the method could also help people with problems like diabetes. Because exercising without eating produces muscles that are better at absorbing glucose — which is important for preventing diabetes — Hespel theorized the strategy would also help diabetics control their insulin levels.
Other experts said that even though people may burn more fat this way, it is mostly fat within the muscles that will be lost and won't make a big difference to people trying to lose weight.

"When you exercise (without eating), fat is broken down more quickly in the muscle," said Andrew Greenberg, director of the Obesity and Metabolism Laboratory at Tufts University. "You may enhance how you burn the fat in the muscles, but it doesn't affect your overall body fat," Greenberg said. He said more intense exercise may prompt the body to burn more fatty acids in other regions of the body, but that a lot of training would be required to see a big difference.
For recreational athletes interested in maximizing their exercise regimen, some experts recommend a regular training session where you deliberately do not eat beforehand.
"Science is finally catching up with what smart runners have always known," said Ron Maughan, a professor of sport, exercise and health sciences at Loughborough University in Britain. "If you have a long, hard run without breakfast once a week, that hard run will train you to burn fat," he said. "And for the rest of the week, have plenty of carbohydrates so you can train hard."
Maughan cautioned against doing too much exercise on an empty stomach. "That might help you get very good at burning fat, but you won't be very good at whatever exercise it is you're doing," he said. "Without enough fuel, you won't get the intensity of training you need to get improvements."
Potential pitfalls Others were more skeptical and said people shouldn't exercise without having at least a small snack first.
"I think it's actually a pretty bad idea," said Dr. Alexis Chiang Colvin, a sports medicine expert at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York who has worked with professional football and hockey teams.
"If your blood sugar is low, you could wind up getting dizzy and you might not be able to exercise as well as if you were well-nourished," she said. Colvin recommended having something small like a banana before training. She also warned the strategy might make people more prone to injury and that eating was important so the body would have enough nutrients to recover from a bout of exercise.
Hespel acknowledged the method wasn't for everybody and that aside from the pain of struggling through an exercise session while hungry, there are other potential pitfalls.
"When you postpone breakfast to exercise, it is possible you might eat more afterwards," he said. "People exercising (without eating) need to respect all the normal strategies of weight control like not overeating."
Daniel Kobbina, a personal trainer who also runs a martial arts school in London, said the method requires discipline — but it works.
"If you train on an empty stomach, you'll see that six-pack a lot sooner," he said.

How Terry Crews visioned getting out poverty!

If you thought Terry Crew,  ascension to Hollywood Stardom was quick and painless, you'd be wrong.

Excerpts from Muscle & Fitness article by Joe Wuebben // Photography by Jim Wright

"I'm not supposed to be here," says the 42-year old Crews in the back of a chauffeured Lexus SUV en route from Manhattan to Greenwhich." For all intents and purposes , the story should've gone a whole other way. I should be selling insurance outside of Washington , DC. It's so weird how things work out."

"When I first met my wife," says Crews, " I told her, First, we're gonna play in the NFL , then we're gonna move to L.A. and make movies." I always say my artistic talent being somehow used in film. So when I was done playing football, she said, Why don't we just move to L.A?"

"I felt at a very early age that I had to get out of Flint," says Crews. "You either leave or you're gonna trapped. And I decided that football was going to be my path out."

"Terry always had this drive that he was going to succeed, somehow , some way." says his sister , Michaell Crews. "He's never been given a silver spoon. We come from Flint , and it's pretty rough there, so he had to overcome a lot to get where he is now."

5 Worst Beach Body Foods

5 Worst Beach-Body Foods
Summer is a challenging time for Kanye West, Lady Gaga, and Katy Perry. I'm not talking about the pop charts; they seem to have those well in hand. I'm talking about the paparazzi.

Celebrity photographers love nothing more than to catch a pop phenomenon emerging from the surf in St. Barts looking a little flabby, so they can sell their "Shocking Weight Gain!" headlines at the drugstore checkout. Is it unfair? You bet. Are you and I going to stare at the pictures anyways? Oh, yeah.

We like seeing celebs look less than perfect because, come swimsuit season, we all feel like we're being gawked at; and whether those photos wind up in the tabloids or on our mom's Facebook page, we all want to look our best. So what can you do when the cover-ups are about to come off and the cameras about to turn on?

It's simple: Avoid self-sabotage by letting Eat This, Not That! 2011 guide you through the foods and drinks that can cause bloating, water retention, and short-term weight gain—snacks that can make you look flabbier than you really are.
Below, I've listed the very worst beach-body foods and beverages, and some smart alternatives that will help you make this summer your leanest, fittest, healthiest ever! (Note to Lady Gaga: These are foods that you eat. Not foods that you wear. Just FYI.)
 #5: WORST DRINK
Diet Coke (12 fl. oz. bottle) and other diet sodas
0 calories
0 g fat
0 g sugar
No calories, no fat, and no sugar—so what's the harm? For starters, the carbon dioxide that supplies soda's fizz will continue to burble and expand in your stomach, priming you for serious bloat. That's the short-term effect. The long-term could be even worse: The artificial sweeteners in diet soda might actually inhibit weight loss. Studies have shown that rats consuming artificial sweeteners consume more calories at subsequent meals. It's as if the promise of calories, without the payoff, causes the body to crave food. Below is a better beach-day beverage: Hint Water. By drinking water, you keep your body flushed out and your skin looking healthy, and since Hint uses natural flavors, you earn all the boons of hydration without suffering the downsides of sugar and artificial sweeteners.
Drink This Instead!Hint Cucumber Water (16 fl. oz.)

0 g sugar

#4: WORST SNACK
Broccoli with ranch dressing  (1 cup broccoli and 2 Tbsp dressing)
170 calories
14.5 g fat (2 g saturated)
370 mg sodium
Broccoli, like cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage, falls into a class of produce known as cruciferous vegetables. These vegetables are among the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet, and as such, they should be consumed as often as possible. That said, you might want to hold off your day's broccoli until you're off the beach. Cruciferous vegetables contain a sugar called raffinose—the same sugar that gives beans their heavy-winded reputation. In your gut, raffinose is fermented by gas-producing bacteria, which can make you feel bloated and gassy. That's not necessarily unhealthy, but it might lead to some awkward beach photos. Instead, if you're picking beach-bound snacks, pair high-fiber tortilla chips with low-calorie salsa. And be sure to avoid the dietary disasters on this list: The Worst Chips and Dips in America.
Eat This Instead!Food Should Taste Good Jalepeno chips with salsa (1 oz. chips/2 T. salsa)
150 calories
6 g fat (0.5 g saturated)
340 mg sodium
#3: WORST DESSERT
Russell Stover’s Sugar Free Toffee Squares (1.6 oz.)
210 calories
16 g fat (9 g saturated)
0 g sugar
Don't be duped into thinking that these candies are "healthy" just because they're sugar free. First, each serving has nearly half your day's saturated fat, and second, it contains 23 grams of sugar alcohol, a sweet carbohydrate that provides fewer calories per gram than actual sugar. These sweeteners aren't fully absorbed in the body, and as result, they simply ferment and emit gas. For some people, this causes severe discomfort and bloating. Stick with fruit and you'll avoid the problem entirely.
Eat This Instead!Fruit Salad of Banana, Mango, and Papaya (1 cup)
78 calories
0 g fat
14 g sugar
Bonus tip: A day in the sun will probably leave you craving something sweet at night. Check out this indispensable Eat This, Not That! list of the 15 Best & Worst Desserts in America.
#2: WORST DINNER
Stouffer’s Skillets Easy Express Broccoli & Beef (1/2 package)
350 calories
6 g fat (2.5 g saturated)
1,660 mg sodium
Looking beyond the raffinose-riddled broccoli, this meal is stuck with an absurd amount of sodium. If you're hungry enough to work through an entire bag, you've just exceeded your day's allotment by nearly 50 percent. Why is that a problem? Because sodium is an electrolyte that tells your body to withhold water. That's not the same as being properly hydrated. See, sodium-induced water retention causes you to carry water weight, which makes you appear swollen and puffy. Unless you're going for a beached-whale look, seek low-sodium foods before hitting the waves.
Eat This Instead!Birds Eye Viola! Shrimp Scampi (1.75 cups)
190 calories
2.5 g fat (1 g saturated)
540 mg sodium
HEALTH SHOCKER: Beware—Mr. Salty is running loose at your local supermarket and in your favorite restaurants! Click here to check out our shocking list of the 30 Saltiest Foods in America.
#1: WORST SMOOTHIE
Smoothie King The Hulk Strawberry (20 oz.)
1,035 calories
32 g fat (13 g saturated)
125 g sugar
Few foods are as disarming as smoothies. The liquid meals have a reputation for being healthy and low in calories, which seems like a perfect combination right before you bear all on the beach. But let this be your warning: Not all smoothies are created equal. This one from Smoothie King packs as much sugar as 91 Nilla Wafers and more fat than a McDonald's Big Mac. If you drink something like this with any regularity, you might unknowingly be sabotaging your beach body all summer long. Make the swap to Smoothie King's Strawberry Shredder just three times a week and you'll drop more than two pounds every month.
Eat This Instead!Smoothie King Strawbery Shredder (20 oz.)
356 calories
1 g fat (0 g saturated)
41 g sugar
DID YOU KNOW? The average American consumes 450 liquid calories every day—that's a quarter of your daily allowance! And sugar-laden summer drinks are some of the worst offenders. See which summertime beverage is the worst offender in our must-see list of The 20 Worst Drinks in America!

Flabby arms? Diet and exercise can help

By Eve Glicksman, Staff Writer, myOptumHealth

Content provided by
You're ready to throw away all your sleeveless dresses and tank tops. You lost some weight but none of the unsightly flab under your arms.
Women especially may notice their upper arms starting to sag as they reach middle age. Most women do not use the muscles in the back of their upper arms much. Even if you are not overweight, the muscles can become weak and flabby from disuse. Skin also loses elasticity with age, which can make the flesh seem to hang.
Many women cope by simply covering up and making sure their upper arms never see the light of day. But it is possible to firm and sculpt your arms with exercise and a change in diet.
No such thing as "spot reducing"
The only way to get rid of what some call "batwings" is to lose weight. Spot reduction doesn't work. Even if you work out daily with arm weights, excess body fat will hide the defined muscles.
To lose arm wattle, you need to cut back on high-fat, high-calorie junk foods and add more fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and healthy fats to your diet. By working out and reducing body fat, you can lose those batwings twice as fast.
Your exercise plan should combine aerobic and strength training. Be sure to talk to your doctor, though, before you start any new exercise program.
The more food you eat, the more exercise you will need to burn it off. Raising your heart rate with aerobics will help you burn fat all over, including your arms. The goal is to raise your pulse and breathing rate, and break a light sweat.
Strength training will help you build your triceps, the muscles in the back of your arm. This way, your triceps will look tight and defined after you lose the surrounding fat.
Try this
Brisk walking is an aerobic workout that can burn calories. But you can do double-duty with cardio exercises that also use your arm muscles. Tennis, swimming and indoor rowing are ideal for that.
Strength training involves using weights or doing exercises that require resistance. For results, you'll need to do a workout that combines several exercises for 20 minutes, two to three times a week. See the examples below.
Wall push-ups
You can do push-ups on the ground, but if you are a beginner, try doing them against the wall at first.
  • Face the wall, standing a little farther than arm's length.
  • Place your palms flat against the wall at shoulder height and shoulder-width apart.
  • Bend your elbows as you move your upper body slowly toward the wall. Keep your feet planted.
  • Pause, and then slowly push yourself back until your arms are straight. Don't lock your elbows.
  • Do this 10 times. Rest for a minute or two. Then repeat 10 more times.
Triceps extension
  • With a weight in one hand, bend that arm up to your shoulder. Use your other arm to support the working arm above the elbow.
  • Raise the working arm overhead and straighten it, palm facing in.
  • Hold this for one second and slowly bend and lower that arm behind your back. Keep supporting this arm with your other.
  • Repeat the bending and straightening eight to 15 times. Inhale going down, exhale on the way up.
  • Do the same on the other arm.
  • Rest and then repeat this exercise on both arms.
Do these exercises regularly and you won't have to endure any grandchild jiggling your arms again.
